Weed Control
Hills Bushcare has extensive experience removing and implementing control measures for noxious and environmental weeds in a range of environments and sensitive ecological communities.
Our aim is to employ weed treatment practices that are best tailored to the sites individual constraints and will provide the best ecological outcome.
Some issues which may affect weed treatment include endangered fauna or flora in the area, the potential for erosion and top soil loss, weeds providing shade or protection for native growth and the ability to manage weed seed influx along road edges, stormwater or creek lines, topography and proximity to community parklands or walkways.
Hills Bushcare utilise a range of best practice techniques that are specific to the weed type (e.g. woody weeds vs grasses) and often specific to each weed species. Techniques used include hand weeding, scrap and painting, cut and paining, drill and frilling, pruning, brush cutting, chainsawing, spot spraying, high volume spraying and mowing.
Current projects of targeted weed removal include:
- Removing mature and young Olea europaea ssp.cuspidata (African olive) from Cumberland Plain woodland (WSPT Biobanking site) and old pasture land.
- Removing vines such as Anredera cordifolia (Madeira vine), Araujia sericifera (Moth vine), Acetosa sagittata (Turkey rhubarb), Asparagus asparagoides (bridal creeper) and Ipomea indica (morning glory) from reserves in the Hills Shire, Hornsby Shire, Holroyd City, Randwick and Parramatta City Council areas.
-
Removing weedy grasses such as Eragrostis curvula (African lovegrass) Ehrharta erecta (panic velt grass), Paspalum distichum (knot grass), Pennisetum clandestinum (Kikuyu) and Chloris gayana (Rhodes grass) in old pasture paddocks in Western Sydney Parkland.
- Removal of woody weeds including Ochna serrulata (Mickey Mouse bush), Ligustrum lucidium (large leaf privet), Ligustrum sinense (small leaf privet), Cinnamomum camphora (Camphor laurel), Erythrina crista-galli (coral tree) and Acer negundo (box elder) along many of the creek lines of the Hornsby, Hills, Parramatta and Fairfield Councils.
- Removal of aquatic weeds such as Alternanthera philoxeroides (Alligator weed) from Cattai Creek Catchment waterways and private properties/contracts.
